We don’t know how long wine has been made at Lafite.   We do know they were buying from a Pauillac glass factory a few years before the French Revolution in 1789, and it is the wines from that decade that first show the extraordinary longevity that this breakthrough engendered.

The most famous Lafite from this time is the year of Halley’s comet in 1811, still alive two comets later in 1986. Like the rest of Bordeaux Lafite was exhausted by two world wars, and its recovery patchy. But under Charles Chevalier from 1995 the wines have been inspired, and in many vintages unequalled.
